In recent days we have seen homes have been effectively prohibited from installing domestic reverse osmosis (RO) systems by the Union Environment Ministry.
The Ministry has issued a draft notification that seeks to regulate membrane-based water filtration systems. Also Banning of RO purifiers where total dissolved solids (TDS) in water are below 500 milligrams per litre is stated.
The regulation deals with places where water meets up with some definite standards as per stated by the bureau of Indian standards . So let us try to understand why is it done so?
◆◆What is RO water ?:--
Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and suspended chemical elements as well as biological ones (principally bacteria) from water, and is used in both industrial processes and the production of potable water.
◆◆What made it to get criticized ????
As the demand of purified water is getting increased day by day. On the other side of door RO water is also getting criticized on several aspects.
◆ Wastage Of Water --
With growing population and scarcity of resources water crisis is also an inignorable issue. Household reverse-osmosis units use a lot of water because they have low back pressure. As a result, they recover only 5 to 15% of the water entering the system. The remainder is discharged as waste water. Because waste water carries with it the rejected contaminants, methods to recover this water are not practical for household systems. And thus emense wattage of water happens.
◆Makes water lesser qualitative:-
Reverse osmosis per its construction removes both harmful contaminants present in the water, as well as some desirable minerals. Modern studies on this matter have been quite shallow, citing lack of funding and interest in such study, as re-mineralization on the treatment plants today is done to prevent pipeline corrosion without going into human health aspect. And thus it is considered that RO water reduces it's quality.
◆Health concerns :--
As stated above the removal of different useful elements leads to long-term health. RO also filters out calcium, zinc, magnesium, which are essential salts needed by the body. Making it worse to consume.
The study has sought directions to the ministry to conduct research work about the "quality" of water produced by reverse osmosis water purifier called RO filter as compared to natural water and also to take further measures and actions regarding this issue .
